How The Smartphone Market Works!

Smartphone markets are now facing a huge decline in the sales each passing year, we are watching major brands like Samsung and Apple decline in sales of their smartphones every single year. Now this is because these companies don't understand how the Smartphone market works.

I'll be taking this from two different aspects the view of the average consumer and the community we live in today.

View of The Average Consumer

We see big tech companies spend a lot of money innovating, they don't really know what the average consumer wants in the smartphone. They end up making smartphones that feel like they were made for Youtubers to review. Embracing and making features that the average consumer would barely use while drastically increasing the price.

Samsung's second quarter earnings fell by over 50% Due to slow sales of the galaxy s10 while they recorded increase of their Galaxy A-series which are mid-range devices that feature packed and affordable.

The iPhone XR was the best-selling phone of 2018 and Google recorded doubled sales of the mid-range phone pixel 3a.

The reason why these phones sold better than their flagship is because they have exactly what the average consumer care about in a smart phone at a cheaper price point. They have good display, a good camera especially for the Pixel 3a and good battery with an okay performance.

Now this takes us to number two:

The Community We Live In

The truth is no one wants to buy $1000 smartphone every single year I have a friend who's been using the note 8 since it was released and another using the Note 9 with no plans to upgrade anytime soon.

This is pretty much the same with users from all over the world as they are likely to keep using their current smartphones than upgrade to the new ones.

Now this is one issue, smartphone companies tackle very wrongly by bringing on cheeky innovations and design change but the truth is the tech community, the ones that's going to be buying your smartphones they don't care about these features and design changes the truth is they don't care if your phone can wirelessly power share to other devices, they don't care the screen to body ratio of the smart phone, they don't even mind the notch.

There are three most popular smartphone balance, no it's not Apple, Samsung or Huawei. It's

  • Tecno
  • Infinix
  • iTel

All three are owned by the Transsions.

You see Tecno and Infinix make affordable smartphones High-spec while Itel is the king of budget smartphones. In fact, they make smartphones that cost as low as 50 US dollars. These smartphone brands make smart phones like these and they have improved over the years but here's the catch. With smartphones like these they have almost no rival except themselves in fact in 2018 Tecno was fifth admired brand in Africa. These brands are successful not because they innovate but because they meet the end of the average consumers by delivering smart phones that meet basic requirements and at a cheaper price point.

Is Innovation Good?

Of course! innovation is amazing and it brings a lot to be excited about but these days what we are getting is meaningless innovation. there is no real innovation going on instead we're seeing pop-up cameras, flip cameras we're seeing waterfall displays Air Gestures on the s-pen and just meaningless innovation that the average consumer doesn't even care about. if you're going to innovate at least make it worth the money like the Pixel 4 for example can't wait to see how that turns out by the way long story short John Prosser was right when he said,

The smartphone market doesn't need innovation it needs compromise.

The S10 family proves it all they had design change they had better processor, they had wireless power share, they have so many cool features but they didn't sell quite as well as Samsung had expected. This is how the smartphone market really works.

Don’t forget to share this post with the ones who you think might benefit from it.
