What is Instagram?

What's this new thing called Instagram, in which all the cool kids appear to be? It's been around for a couple of years, gaining momentum quiet largely because of a recent fascination with mobile photography. Instagram is a social networking app for the posting of pictures and videos shot on mobile phones. As with Facebook or Twitter, anyone who creates an Instagram account has a news feed and a profile.

When uploading a picture or video on Instagram, it will show up on your profile. Other users following you can see your posts in their feed. You'll also see updates from the ones you follow.

What is Instagram?

Instagram is like a simpler Facebook version, with a focus on smartphone use and visual sharing. Like other social networks, on Instagram you connect with other users by following them, being followed by them, posting pictures, liking pictures, tagging and private messaging. You can save your pictures on Instagram, too.

Devices for Instagram

On iOS devices like iPhone and iPad, as well as Android devices like Google's phones and tablets, Samsung and others, Instagram is available for free.

It can be accessed from a computer also on the web. However, it is only possible to upload photos, videos and share existing content with other Instagram users from the mobile app.

How to Create an Account on Instagram

Instagram asks you to create a Free Account before you can use the app. You can sign up by email or using your existing Facebook account. Just a username and a password is all that is required. You can change your email address on Instagram any time.

You might be asked if you want to follow friends in your Facebook network who are on Instagram. You can do this right away, or skip the process and later switch back to it.

It's an impressive idea to edit your profile by adding your name, a profile photo, a precise bio, and a link to your website if you own one.

Instagram As Social Network

The main intention at Instagram is to share and find the best pictures and videos. Each user profile has a number of followers and following, which shows how many people they follow and how much is their following.

Each user profile has a button which you can tap to follow. If a user has a private profile they will first approve your request then.

When your profile is created and made public, you and your pictures and videos can be found and viewed by anyone. Set your profile to private if you want your posts only to be viewed by the ones who follow you.

It’s fun and easy to interact on posts. To like it, double-tap any post, or add a comment to the bottom. You can also use Instagram Direct to click the arrow button to share that with someone.

Use the search tab to browse through posts recommended to you if you want to find or add more friends or interesting accounts to follow. You can also use the search icon underneath to search for specific accounts or hashtags.

Applying Filters & Editing Posts on Instagram

Instagram has come a long way in terms of the posting options since its early days. Users were only able to post photos via the app when it was launched in 2010, and apply filters without any additional editing functions.

Now a days, you can post photos or videos on your device via the app or from existing ones. You can also post videos up to one minute of length and you have additional filters along with the ability to edit and tweak them.

When you hit the Instagram posting in the middle, you can choose the photo or video to tell the application whether you want to make a post or not.

If you don't want to post it through the app, select the ones you've saved using the Library.

Instagram has 40 filters which can be used for photos and videos. Some additional photo editing options allow you to straighten out the image, adjust things such as brightness and warmth, and color tone. You can disable audio for videos, select a wrap frame for your videos and trim videos if you are using the iOS version of Instagram. Or you can also make a 15 second video clip using Instagram Reels.

Sharing Posts on Instagram

After applying an optional filter and making some edits, you're prompted to a tab where you can fill out a caption, tag other users, tag it to a location and post it to your other social networks at the same time.

Viewing & Publishing Instagram Stories

Instagram has a feature called Stories, a secondary feed that appears at the top of your main feed. It includes photo bubbles of the users you are following.

To see the stories of those users or the story they have published over the last 24 hours, tap their bubble. If you are familiar with Snapchat, you might notice how similar it is to the feature of Instagram Stories.
