WhatsApp is a text voice and text messaging app that was released in 2009. Since 2009 it has become extremely popular app of the decade, thanks to its smooth functionality and simplicity.  It allows text messaging and calls on both desktop and mobile devices, free of charge.

The beneficial part which makes this application more appealing is that it works on both the mobile phones and operating systems making it easier and simpler to communicate.  Also, it can use Wi-Fi as well as cellular data to make person to person or conference calls.

Here’s what you need to know about WhatsApp:

What is WhatsApp - Free International Calls

WhatsApp requires the cellular or Wi-Fi connection on your phone to enable messaging and voice calling to almost anyone on the planet, alone or in a group, and is especially flattering for families who have their major members abroad or away from them and small collaborative working groups. WhatsApp allows you to make phone calls, send and receive text, voice messages, documents, photographs, and videos. WhatsApp is totally free of cost and doesn't require any premium account as it uses the 4 G, 3 G, 2 G, EDGE, or Wi-Fi access of your phone instead of the data plan or texting packages of your cellular network.  If you are connected via Wi-Fi it will never eat your data plan. The best and most beneficial part of this app is that it allows free calling and texting worldwide without any interruption. What more is that if you aren't in the same region you'll still be able to talk to each other.

What is WhatsApp - Easy Chatting & Calling Over Most Platforms

WhatsApp is an Agnostic application. You don't need to own the same phone brand as your call recipient or be on a specific network. WhatsApp works with iPhone, Android, and Windows phones. Also on Mac or Windows desktop or laptop computers, which you can use to send and receive messages, but not to make voice calls. Like any other SMS messenger, you can start a conversation with up to four people, with an individual or group, and a video conference. The iOS version also comes with Instagram and Facebook in-app support for video replay.

Plus Points

You can also share your live location, upload your status to WhatsApp so your loved ones can see what you are feeling, share contact information, set up personalized wallpapers and notifications, email chat history, use the camera to shoot photos and videos from the app, and send messages to multiple contacts simultaneously. You're always signed in so you're never actually going to miss those messages you receive, but even if alerts are missed when your phone is offline, WhatsApp will save recent messages and will show them when you get online.

How Does WhatsApp Work?

Same as iMessage for iPhone, WhatsApp has a basic interface that displays your chats with time in text bubbles, and notifies you when your recipient has read your message. The ticks turn blue.

WhatsApp can recognize people who already use the application or who are in your contact list, so you'll never need to add them manually. You may also invite people who aren't on WhatsApp or who are not in your contact list to communicate with other users in your circle. WhatsApp allows you to create work, friends, or family groups for up to 256 participants to stay in touch with. The app lets you adjust your background and shares your GPS location to an interactive map. You can enter a message in status which will last up to 24 hours, or until you change it. You can also block the ones you don't like within the app and can also send information of one individual to another.

What is WhatsApp - Security

The app is equipped with a search feature that allows you to search by keyword from a message, group, contact name or number. In the conversation you can search for those keywords too. WhatsApp is interoperable with Google which means you are free to save a copy of chats on Google Drive and if you are not on google you can also save them to your phone memory. If you lost critical messages you can re-download and re-install the app to find your messages.

WhatsApp has a wide range of advanced features regarding security. Much like Apple's iMessage and Signal, it has end-to-end encryption. All messages which flow through the system are encrypted so that they can only be accessed by the sender and the receiver. This means that WhatsApp can’t even read your message if it wants to. The app doesn't retain your data or information, and you can only accept messages from people you approve as contacts. Like a growing number of digital services such as Google and Facebook, WhatsApp uses two-factor authentication, which means you'll be sent a verification code to your phone number in order to access the account.

However, group messages can interfere with some privacy settings, in that if you have blocked others, they may still appear in a group message which you can see.

Active Users Survey

WhatsApp says it is being used by over 2 billion people in over 180 countries, with more than 500 million active users daily. WhatsApp Messenger is now the leading mobile messaging app in 112 countries and Messenger (By Facebook) is the top mobile messaging app in 57 countries. The app is prevalent in India, Germany, Russia and the UK. WhatsApp is not the only game in town.    Competitors of WhatsApp include Line, Imo, Kakao Talk, WeChat, Kik, and Viber. WhatsApp typically adopts a broad approach to attract as many users around the world as possible.

WhatsApp Mobile Updates for 2020

After 2018, WhatsApp hasn't launched any new features, but continues to change and improve existing features. Most recently, WhatsApp introduced new privacy settings that give you more power over group messages, especially the ones who can add you to groups. Admins will give you a private invitation via Settings > Account > Privacy> Groups.

There are three choices available: My Contacts, My Contacts Except & Everyone. My Contacts are limited to people you have in your address book who can add you to groups and My Contacts except means which contacts can add you to a WhatsApp group.

New call-waiting features let you decide to accept an incoming call from WhatsApp while you're on another call. Updated Chats screen design to make your messages easier to read and you can send messages directly from the Braille keyboard through VoiceOver mode. A groundbreaking addition from an accessibility perspective.

WhatsApp’s New Features

WhatsApp is regularly updated with new features and improvements. WhatsApp contacts will now appear as recommendations in the sharing sheet for those using iOS 13, when you share content from other applications. New search features allow you to filter by author and type of content, so you can find unique chats or photos you are searching for.   The app also lets you set new privacy settings that allow you to monitor who can add you to groups, and administrators can give you a personal invitation. For instance, go to:

 Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.

WhatsApp also introduced call-waiting support, so that incoming WhatsApp calls can be accepted when on another call. When using VoiceOver mode, you can now also send messages from the Braille keyboard. And now, allowing Low Data Mode will disable auto-downloading of media.

Latest Amendments

Latest changes to WhatsApp included new animated sticker packages, QR code scanning of contacts and dark mode for WhatsApp. But perhaps the biggest improvement is that the overall number of participants on the video and voice calls have doubled from four to eight. You can now press and hold in video calls to enlarge a participant's video, and the video chat icon is automatically applied to group chats of eight or fewer people, so you can start a video call with one tap.

WhatsApp Web app is by far the fastest and most powerful choice for using WhatsApp on a device. WhatsApp Web really doesn't need downloaded software for a particular operating system, and can be accessed via most browsers like Safari, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Firefox instead.

What is WhatsApp Web?

WhatsApp Web is a desktop edition running inside normal Mac or Windows browsers (with the exception of Internet Explorer). But sadly, it does not provide all the services available on smartphones. Anything you do on the web will be synchronized and mirrored on the iPhone or Android app, so all your chats get synchronized, but the web version does not provide any calling functionality, which is definitely a growth field for WhatsApp Platform. A Business version is also introduced which enables businesses to use WhatsApp to communicate with customers.

What More?

You can access a web version of the app with WhatsApp installed on your phone which mirrors your chat, groups and broadcast activities. You can chat on big browsers using the web app on your Mac or Windows machine but you can't make phone calls. You can turn on desktop notifications to incoming text or voice messages on WhatsApp Web.

Limitations of WhatsApp

WhatsApp doesn't have many major drawbacks, but there are a few that could annoy future users.

You can only interact with people who have the app, so it can take a little bit of hard work to get friends and family to download and learn to use another app, especially when they feel they can only text you without it right now. Although WhatsApp introduced a "stories" feature, while chatting with friends, there are still no face features available to play around with. You would not be able to use an integrated virtual assistant, too.

There is a limit to send a file, too. You cannot send video files larger than 16 MB. While calls are free, data charges can still be stacked up so users should proceed with caution. You can't dial 911 or other emergency services with WhatsApp, either.

WhatsApp Messenger is much easy to learn and use as compared to other applications. At the initial stage you can start slowly with daily texting & calling before indulging into more versatile features which give you freedom to contact each other through groups or uploading creative statuses. The best of all is that it is totally encrypted and free of cost.
